Is the Communication Between Horse and Rider Language
Language and the play of words have always intrigued me. I love learning other languages, though I am not fluent in any of the three languages I’ve studied. According to Dictionary.com, which lists several different explanations, language is “the means of communication used by animals”. I understand the meaning of pinned back ears, or the baring of teeth. I know a little heel will convey my need to move to right of the rider ahead of me. If I touch my horse’s chest, I’m signaling for her to move backwards. I communicate with my horse through a “system of formalized symbols, signs, sounds, gestures, or the like used or conceived as a means of communicating thought, emotion, etc”(Dictionary.com). Do you believe that horseback riding is a language? Is the communication between horse and rider just part of the sport like a soccer player kicking the ball? Let me know what you think by posting a comment.
