Winter Coats
I’ve belong to two horses. Ace, my Quarter Horse mare—she’s the horse in the header of the page—moved north to our current location around ten years ago. Her winter coat is moderately heavy. My Appaloosa, who’s in his twenties, has creased to develop his shaggy winter coat. I never put a blanket on him until the last two winters and he has never lived more than 35 miles from our barn. The winter’s temperatures turn hit single digits in February. We rarely have the multiple footers like we experienced when both he and I were younger. He’s not the healthiest horse in the world. In fall and winter, his arthritis makes him stiff. He has several leg physical injuries. So, Horses for Lifers, am I worrying over nothing?
